What India actually built

measured against what was announced

Defence, infrastructure, trade and manufacturing, drawn from named publishers and nothing else. Every number carries its source, its verification date and a confidence grade. Where the figures contradict the press release, the figures win — and where a figure cannot carry the weight put on it, this site says so on the same line.

Temples & sacred sites: Sites the atlas can place, with whatever the record says about each. Canon membership comes from the tradition's own list; a dedication may be stated or inferred from the name, and the difference is printed on every row. The source states the state. All 29 of its state names match the map's topology exactly. Shading is by rank, not by count — 3348 of 3466 placed, 118 the join could not put in a state.

A cell is about sixty kilometres across, which is too coarse to catch Dadara & Nagar Havelli, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep. They are missing from the picture rather than empty in it.

Not a layer here — Contested religious sites: Its state names are the states of 1990 — its Adilabad sites sit under ANDHRA PRADESH, and Adilabad has been in Telangana since 2014. Joined to a modern map it would move hundreds of sites into the wrong state while looking entirely normal. It keeps its own page, on its own boundaries.

Not a layer here — Defence establishments and production sites: There is no per-state list of them in this repository. The defence data here is national totals, trade codes and company names without locations, and inventing coordinates for a factory is exactly the failure this site exists to avoid.

38.4thousand crore

FY2025-26 · up from ₹686 crore in FY2013-14

That is a 56× rise in nominal rupees. Roughly a third of it is rupee inflation and depreciation rather than volume, and the series counts authorisations, not deliveries. It is still a real and large increase. It is not 56×.

The charts that matter

Each pairs a headline claim against the measure that tests it — the fastest way to see where Indian delivery matches Indian announcement, and where it does not.

Defence exports against defence production

medium

Exports as a share of what India builds. The gap is the domestic absorption of Indian defence output.

050k100k150k200kFY14FY17FY19FY21FY23FY25FY26
Defence exportsDefence production

Exports are around 15% of production value. India builds mainly for itself; the export story is real but small against the domestic order book.

Defence budget against capital outlay

high

How much of the defence budget actually buys equipment rather than paying salaries and pensions.

0200k400k600k800k1MFY15FY25FY26FY27
Ministry of Defence budget allocationDefence capital outlay

Capital outlay sits near 26-27% of the budget. Revenue expenditure — pay and pensions — crowds out modernisation, and this ratio has barely moved in a decade.

Defence corridors: committed against grounded investment

low

Investment announced via MoU versus investment actually on the ground.

Uttar PradeshTamil Nadu010k20k30k40k50k
Defence corridor investment committedDefence corridor investment grounded

Roughly 15% of committed corridor investment has been grounded. This single chart is the best corrective to announcement-driven infrastructure reporting.

Highway network length against annual construction

high

Network growth includes re-designating existing state roads. Annual construction is what was actually built.

050k100k150k200kFY14FY20FY21FY22FY23FY24FY25
National highway network lengthNational highways constructed per year

Construction has plateaued around 10,000-12,000 km a year since the FY2020-21 peak, even as headline network length keeps rising.

Metro network length against ridership

medium

Track built versus passengers carried, indexed to 2014.

4084000100200300400500'14'25
Operational metro rail networkDaily metro rail ridership

The two lines track almost exactly — meaning passengers per kilometre have been flat. New metro lines are not, on average, better used than the ones they followed.

Port capacity against cargo actually handled

medium

Installed capacity versus throughput across all Indian ports.

01k2k3k4kFY15FY26
Total port capacityCargo handled at all ports

Utilisation is around 59%. There is real headroom for trade growth, and weak near-term returns on further capacity spending.

Merchandise against services exports

high

Where India's export growth actually comes from.

0100200300400500FY25FY26
Merchandise exportsServices exports

Services grew 8.71% in FY2025-26 while goods grew 0.93%. India's export engine is offices, not factories — the opposite of the manufacturing-led story usually told.

Arms import dependence and supplier concentration

medium

India's share of global arms imports against Russia's share of Indian imports.

02040608010–1420–24
India's share of global major-arms importsRussia's share of India's arms imports

Supplier diversification is the clearest structural win: Russia fell from 72% to 36% of Indian arms imports in a decade. India is nonetheless still the world's second-largest importer.
